In 1838 the Cornish boatbuilder, W Peters, created a new design which he considered perfection. The first such gig was named 'Treffry' and this original gig is still raced to this day by the Newquay Rowing Club. All gigs that compete to-day under the Cornish Pilot Gig Association must conform to the same 'Treffry' specifications. |

The Dart Gig Club, who organise this event, operate two gigs, 'Volante', and 'Lightning', with both having been built locally. Gig racing is
a vibrant and inclusive team sport that is the fastest growing rowing activity in the South West. Amongst the rowing world, gig racing is
considered the ultimate test in 'fixed-seat' rowing. The regattas are tough, but friendly, competitions and attract many spectators. |
