Bantham stands on the River Avon, the least known of South Ham's five rivers. The Avon is not suited to pleasure boats and therefore, fortunately, remains unspoilt. Subsequently the area offers the visitor excellent walking country, and the bather a magnificant sandy bay, which also happens to be the best sufing beach on the South Devon coast. |

The village of Bantham boasts an excellent pub, The Sloop Inn which stands at the head of a row of thatched and cobbed cottages. At the end of the village lies the Bantham Ham. It is here that reputedly the Danes invaded in the 9th century, only to be slaughtered in a bloody battle. |

A wonderful day can be spent walking the banks of the Avon (Avon Estuary Walk - Information Sheet). Start
by using the ferry to cross onto the Bigbury side, walking towards Averton Gifford. Lunch can be taken as
either an al-fresco seafood feast at the Oyster Shack's Bistro (just off the tidal path) where you can take
your own wine, or at Averton Gifford's "Fisherman's Rest". Returning to Bantham along the opposite bank
you should have worked up an appetite to enjoy a drink and dinner at The Sloop. |
