WALKING SALCOMBE - BOLT HEAD |
|
|
| From the centre of Salcombe take the South Sands Ferry and enjoy the best viewpoint for seeing the town.
As you approach North Sands you will pass Fort Charles, originally built by Henry VIII. Cross the sands, passing the old Lifeboat Station, and walk to Overbecks House - now
a National Trust property, the gardens look their best in the spring and autumn. Take the track to the right of the gates and then take the left fork (Bolt Head).

|
From Sharp Tor observation point, you can look down on Salcombe and possibly even glimpse
Dartmoor's Haytor in the distance. Following the signs for Starehole Bay, the path descends
into the valley where large ponds teem with wildlife including dragonflies. The route then
leads to Bolt Head with with extensive views from Plymouth to Prawle Point - you may be
fortunate enough to enjoy a peregrine soaring over the cliff tops.
Head back towards Sharpitor along the SW Coastal Path. If the estuary water is still you may
be able to identify the wreck (1936) of the four-masted "Herzogin Cecile".
|
| The path then takes you through The Rags (ragged rocks below Sharp Tor) which again
offers magnificant views along some of the 26 miles of estuary shoreline, and 200 acres of estuary and creek waters. Return to Salcombe for refreshments
at The Ferry Inn.
