Batson (the place where Bada placed his stone) was a Saxon settlement before the creation of Salcombe which only gained precedence after 1086 (Doomsday Book). Two lime kiln ruins are evidence of an industry that produced agricultural lime for the local farms and lime mortar for the building industry. In front of the thatched cottages there is a pump which records the site of the village smithy and the pub which used to sell the potent White Ale which was brewed at Kingsbridge. |

Today, the village looks much as it must have done centuries ago with the slip leading from the creek onto the Green and the cottages framing the Green The village conforms to everyone's impression of that special Devon creekside village. Details of a walk around Batson and Snape Point can be found on Estuary Walks. |
